Product Design Research and Knowledge Utilisation

This paper addresses the issues of knowledge utilisation and its relation to Product Design Research. It supports the view that Product Design Research is relative to the domain and dependent on the domain specific knowledge. Domain specific knowledge is understood to be the knowledge in the particular area of expertise. However, this paper is going to emphasise the importance of domain specific design knowledge (knowledge of design discipline itself product design) and its relevance to the applied research in that particular domain. It outlines the domain specific knowledge utilisation throughout the different stages of the design and development process of a particular product/system: (a) before a design is started, (b) during the early stage of the design process (c) during the design and development process and (d) after the product/system is produced and is in use/operation. The paper illustrates that design research should not function separately from practice but as a development of it. The inclusion of research in the design and development process can make significant contribution to the product/system success by creating new market niches.
