Innovation as a field of historical knowledge.
A contribution toward a relationship between research and practice of industrial design.

The aim of this contribution is to understand just what is the role of history for industrial design, both as a culture and as a field of practice. In particular, I would like to focus on how the foundation of a history of industrial design oriented toward professional and cultural education needs to begin with the implicit characteristics of the subject of the research (design). Acknowledging the fact that the particular nature of industrial design involves an active participation in innovative processes, this paper proposes an approach to historical research on industrial design based on the methodologies of the disciplines that study socio-technical change.
