Is
industrial design research really different from other research?
As
the establishment of a research culture in Industrial design gathers momentum,
one of the questions faced is regarding which role model to follow. The
scientific method as followed by natural science researchers is not wholly
suitable. So are the Art and Engineering models, which are only partly suitable.
This paper discusses the view that while a new research paradigm in design
has become necessary, it is not as though designers need to reinvent the
wheel. This paper compares the well-established scientific research method
to the design method as being practiced by designers and draws parallels.
A possible direction for the emergence of the new paradigm, by strengthening
the design method, is shown. Till such time as design acquires a research
identity of its own, a middle path that design researchers can follow is
illustrated by an example of an investigation on the role of emotions as
semantic constructs in product design. In this middle path both qualitative
and quantitative methods compliment each other in the mold of design being
a science of the artificial as suggested by Herbert Simon. Any new research
paradigm will have to weave the philosophy of design using both inductive
as well as deductive logical arguments.
