The
lark ascending
sustainability and design research
This
paper discusses the meaning of design research in relation to
the central activity of design engagement. A general understanding of design
research is reached, followed by a description of the authors own
research into sustainable product design - which exemplifies the approach
and couples theoretical considerations with exploratory design development.
The argument is made that design research differs from other, perhaps more
conventional forms of research that are based on quantitative or qualitative
analytical methodologies. The heuristic aspect of the design process suggests
a distinct and important approach to research within the design disciplines.
