History
of Design and Design Research
Toward a Multilinear History of Design
Recently,
practice of industrial design and studies about it have undergone major
changes. History, and Design History too, must be rewritten every time
new points of view arise. The aim of this paper is to illustrate a program
of research that goes beyond a linear interpretation of the history of
design. In particular, the study focuses on the way the lines of development,
in the 19th century, take form in relation to the appearance of technique
as a dominant theme. Today a complex, multilinear approach to history
is necessary, in order to make design history into a tool for design research,
to better understand the present and think critically about the future.
