Pragmatist
Semiotics as a Framework for Design Research
The
relation between the user, the design product and the object can be examined
from three different viewpoints. First, the product is an instrument or
a tool. From this operational point of view the product should be designed
so that it is good for the purpose. Second, the product relates to the
subject. In this case the product belongs to the constitution of the subject
and as such communicates the values and choices of the subject. The first
aspect relates to the operations in regard to the object, but this second
aspect relates to the operations in regard to the social context of the
subject. Third, the perceptual experience produced by it is estimated
to be aesthetically satisfactory or not.
