Design
research as an action-oriented
interdisciplinary activity
Designs purpose is to facilitate tasks, to make them more effective
and rewarding, and to organize human experience, action and production.
Research in design is intrinsically interdisciplinary. A taxonomy of types
of research helps recognize the multifaceted nature of this field. This
paper discusses design interventions that have included research from
a variety of fields, showing different models of research, it will demonstrate
how the knowledge generated by research can be turned into design criteria;
and how the resulting design actions and products affect people. The paper
intends to contribute to building a common culture for design in the area
of action-oriented experimental research.
