History,
theory, and gender:
researching womens relationship to the history of design
This
paper explores the relationship between history, theory and gender in
relation to design history research in Britain over the last two decades.
By examining aspects of my own research, I aim to map out some of the
theoretical and methodological issues which have faced historians who
have tried to take account of womens relationship to design. In
the process of considering the ways in which womens relationship
to design has been addressed by historians, a number of related questions
emerge which connect with the broad themes of the conference.
