The
offenbach approach:
design theory and design research in a disciplinary way
Design as a disciplin has a special object of knowledge, therefore Design
Theory is to build upon the experiences of the designer and prove its
influence into the design practice. This can be clarified at the nexus
between psychological symbol research and design-specific symbol interpretation.
On this basis, a disciplinary Design Research developes. Examples are
provided by the C-Lab for customized Design at the Hochschule
für Gestaltung in Offenbach/Germany and in the field of Interface
Design.
A New Research Culture has to overcome the eclecticism of
regional or even personal theoretical approaches in Design; Research departments
will develop the profile of the Design schools as they do it at Universities.
Even the teaching has virtually to cooperate with a global spectrum of
different profiled institutions. Whats left is the question of future-relevant
research objects.
