Interdisciplinary
and collaborative - Design research
Case studies in a university environment
Alain
Findeli in his Introduction in Design Issues Summer 1999 states " design
is about to gain its sovereignty and to contribute to general knowledge,
by posing new and relevant research questions and by helping reduce uncertainty
and ignorance about what concerns us all:" I feel that design can be
the trigger for posing not only questions but research processes as well.
The challenge ahead for the design community in the university based research
projects is to identify those disciplines where industrial design can provide
a beneficial input. An active approach must be taken to ensure the involvement
of the designer is given the same value and status as all the other researchers.
The rowing machine project demonstrates the success of a collaborative inter-disciplinary
framework whereby the goals, objectives and aspirations of each discipline
are clarified, defined and placed on an equal footing. The case studies
demonstrated varying degrees of work satisfaction depending on the process
for the designers and the participating researchers. It will not be enough
to simply educate other disciplines to use the resources of industrial design.
People do not like change - but they do like new ideas.
