Combining
design with other disciplines, creating new knowledge: the case of the idbm
programme
This
paper presents the case of the International Design Business Management
(IDBM) Programme that is an example of a successful effort to create new
design knowledge through interdisciplinary convergence. The nature of industrial
design as a multidisciplinary field and various business-related factors
set demanding challenges for research and education within this area. These
challenges can be addressed through close co-operation and teamwork between
the professions connected to product development. As a collaborative programme
between three leading Finnish universities, the IDBM concept contributes
to the creation of a common ground for industrial design research
through concrete measures.
