The
phd program typographic revolutions held by the design department of the
university of Barcelona: some thoughts about an experience and some general
conclusions concerning research on design.
Nowadays when research on Design is considered, PhD studies and its planning
brings about a practical experience to reflect upon, because they organise
and ought to manage research activities no matter what branch of knowledge
is being examined. This paper explains, and thinks about, what has been
the seven years long experience of a PhD program devoted to typography,
type design and printing which aims were to build both a Design knowledge
and a methodology which enables to deal with Design. The background is to
consider what Basic research could be and how it can supply theoretic tools
strongly enough to work afterwards, firstly, in applied research, and then
to be useful for Designing activity as well. As PhD studies in Spain have
a very special pedagogic structure, the paper focuses on what had been the
choices taken when preparing it and the premises underlying in the work
done until now. Few consequences are commented at the end; however, the
final balance takes more into account the starting points, many fears, some
worries but also some hopes which allows us to start a new PhD program in
the future.
